What makes mobile controls actually good

April 3, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

Touch controls are the make-or-break of a mobile game, and it's amazing how many studios still get them wrong. After years of playing, a few patterns stand out clearly.

The best games embrace the touchscreen instead of pretending it's a gamepad. Tap-to-move, gesture-based actions, and generous hit zones feel natural. The worst ones cram tiny virtual buttons into corners where your thumbs cover half the screen, then wonder why you keep missing.

One-handed play is a huge bonus, especially for games you'll open on the go. FISHIN' FRENZY does this well, keeping everything reachable with one thumb. Racers like Neon Drift League smartly offer both tilt and button options, since neither works for everyone.

My advice: spend the first few minutes in a game's control settings before you judge it. A game that feels clumsy at default often has a hidden layout that transforms it. And if it doesn't, that tells you something too.
